Senior Photos for Guys That Feel Natural & Easy

 

 

Senior photos for guys should feel relaxed, natural, and easy to plan. Whether your senior wants something casual and low-key or a more polished, urban look, my goal is to create photos that feel genuine without awkward posing or overthinking every detail.


From helping choose locations and outfits to guiding the session from start to finish, I keep the process simple and straightforward — so you can walk away with photos that look confident, natural, and actually feel like him.

Locations + Timing


I’ve found that guys prefer locations with a few key things in common: flexibility in timing (so we’re not dependent on sunrise or sunset), a quieter setting without a lot of crowds, and a mix of both city and park elements for variety.


Downtown areas or parks with a lot of shade allow us to be really flexible with timing. In the summer, morning sessions are between 9 and 11 am and afternoon sessions begin around 3:30. As we head into fall sessions have to wrap up by sunset around 6pm.


Some popular locations include: Plymouth, Northville, Hines drive, downtown Detroit and the Matthaei Botanical Gardens

For longer sessions I love to pair:


Downtown Northville + Waterford Bend Park (Hines drive)

Downtown Plymouth + Plymouth Township Park (McClumpha)

Law Quad + nearby parks


Keep it quiet by:

  • Scheduling for a weekday or even weekday morning (I offer sessions Monday-Thursday)
  • Avoid festivals & events (like Plymouth fall fest or Northville skeleton season)
  • Picking a park location


My recommendation for a laid-back session is Northville or Plymouth- easy parking, head back towards the car for outfit changes, lots of scenic backdrops. And when your son asks, "what are we eating after this?" you'll have tons of great restaurant options.

Outfits & Props



I have a full guide on what to wear for senior photos, including three outfit ideas specific to guys. Check it out HERE. In short, I recommend guys plan 2-3 outfits with a range of casual-dressy. I have also found that guys are more excited to include props than the girls- some ideas are:


  • Letterman jacket / sports gear
  • Their car
  • Instruments / band t-shirts
  • College merch (t-shirts, flags, hat)
  • Hobby items like a fishing pole or skateboard
  • Pets (yes they are welcome!)


Who can you bring?

Yes you can grab a few shots with your sibling, parent, significant other, etc. If you're looking to add on the whole family I offer this too.

Posing & Session flow



My approach to posing is relaxed, natural, and fully guided throughout the session. Most senior guys show up saying they “don’t know what to do” — and that’s completely normal.


I love using downtown areas because there are natural props built in: benches, railings, brick walls, stairs, and open walking areas. Sessions feel more like moving around and hanging out than standing stiffly for photos.


I’ll guide your grad through posing the entire time, including where to stand, what to do with his hands, and small expression changes that make photos feel confident and natural.

Directions are included on the links above. I offer 30, 60 and 90-minute sessions. All sessions include the full gallery of edited images- I choose the best images and deliver those to you within 3 weeks. They are yours to keep, print and post.


If your looking for one location + 1-2 outfits --> Book 30-minutes ($355)


1-2 locations + 2-3 outfits --> Book 60-minutes ($575)


2-3 locations + 3+ outfits --> Book 90-minutes ($775)


Final tips:


  • Lay out your outfits in advance, including accessories like shoes and socks. Hang them up together in the car (we will talk about outfit changes depending on your location).

  • Think about schedules early- guys gravitate towards the fall but sports and school activities can eat into your evening time and by October sun is setting around 6pm.

  • Grads typically book months in advance for the best time slots (summer nights & fall!) but I can usually fit in a morning or afternoon session on late notice. Take advantage of days you have off school to book these (send me a message if it's not listed).

Downtown Plymouth

Easy location- we park near the Penn and do short loops with each outfit. Ideal for suit + tie into more casual outfits. Tip: avoid "concert in the park" nights and festivals.

Downtown Northville

Another easy location with a lot of options for different backgrounds and posing. Avoid the October skeletons and other events. A quick drive to Waterford Bend Park for a city + park combo (60 & 90 minute sessions).

Waterford Bend Park

My go-to for fall colors (mid-October) with a stream and a couple bridges. Later in fall I go right next door to Cass Benton.

Stadiums, alleyways & art- we all LOVE a Detroit session!

Note: they have stopped allowing photography at the Z-lot (rooftop & artwork) and I'll be looking for a similar location to offer for next season.

Woodsy, green, bridges. Best in the summer & early fall.
