Planning your daytime session
There are a lot of perks to scheduling your session during the day—fewer crowds, no conflict with evening sports or family plans, and the flexibility to move between locations more easily so we can focus on getting great photos.
That said, lighting does play a bigger role depending on where you choose to shoot.
For morning sessions, the light is essentially reversed from what you’d get in the evening. For example, at the Canton wildflower field (one of my most popular spots), the sunrise sits behind the road and nearby subdivision—which isn’t the prettiest backdrop. Because of that, I don’t typically recommend this location in the morning.
Locations I do love for morning sessions:
Early June peonies at the Nichols Arboretum
Shaded parks and meadows
August wildflowers in Plymouth
Urban spots are much more forgiving when it comes to lighting since we can always find pockets of shade.
Some great urban options for mornings or afternoons:
Local cities like Plymouth and Northville
Downtown Detroit — Eastern Market or around the Detroit Institute of Arts
Ann Arbor — Graffiti Alley or the University of Michigan Law Quadrangle
